Franz Berwald

1796-1868

Symphony Singuliere

This is a rendition of Berwald's Symphony #3, "Singuliere", in 81 equal and using the Jeux organ soundfont in place of a GM font. Conceptually, we have a gigantic eighteenth century French organ here, with ranks and ranks and ranks of keys, vast numbers of independent stops, and something not remotely human at the keyboard. The result sounds far more like a symphony than any organ symphony I have ever heard.

The tuning was done using my complex number algorithm; I have left the complex numbers to speak for themselves and argue the merits of their tuning case. For anyone wishing to make their own numberless version, I am putting up Scala scores for these meantone versions here.

First movement 13.1 mb
