Barbara Strozzi

1619-1677

Barbara Strozzi is certainly one of the most remarkable figures of the early baroque, and not only because of her sex. Her career as a virtuoso-composer was a completely professional one, and she published a great deal. Her music was an expressionistic reflection of her text, and like Hugo Wolf, a purely instrumental interpretation, as given below, misses a lot of what she was about. Nonetheless, her music deserves to be better known even aside from the text.
