A particular division of the tetrachord, usually classified as diatonic, chromatic or enharmonic according to the size of the largest interval [the "characteristic interval"].
In this book [Divisions of the Tetrachord] a fourth class, hyperenharmonic is added to describe those genera whose largest intervals are larger than a ditone (81/64).
