hyperypate

(Greek: "beyond the highest")

[John Chalmers, Divisions of the Tetrachord]

The diatonic Lichanos Hypaton, transliterated as hyperhypate. A note a whole tone below the tonic which was borrowed from the diatonic genus into the Chromatic and Enharmonic Dorian Modes in order to form an interval of 5 dieses (probably 7/6) with the second note, Parhypate in Archytas's tuning. This configuration is repeated at the 3/2, yielding an 8 tone scale composed of two pentachords.
