A plucked string instrument played by professional musicians. The Kithara had a wooden body and was played with a plectrum which the executant swept over all the strings while damping the ones not desired to sound with the fingers. Although the etymological ancestor of the guitar, the playing style of the kithara more closely resembles that of the autoharp.
